For my passion project this semester, I came up with a project that combines photography with two other art mediums, watercolor and digital drawing (using Procreate). Both of these mediums I have very little experience with, and the project proved to be more challenging than I had anticipated. My initial plan was to take three of my photographs and "recreate" them, using three other mediums. When this idea came to mind, I immediately knew I wanted to use the photo above from the Cinque Terra in Italy. It was during the painting process that I realized how difficult it can be to paint something with so many intricate details that you might not notice at first glance.
It was after I completed the watercolor painting that I began to struggle with what I was creating. I would get frustrated with the outcome and the mediums I was using. I decided to focus on just one image, instead of three. It took many, many tries before I decided to use Procreate. I appreciated that it was fun and stress-free, after many challenging attempts with other mediums.
After looking at the same image for so long, I became very aware of the colors as well as the shapes and lines within this photograph. My watercolor painting represents the color element well, and the digital drawings, specifically in black and white, highlight the buildings and architecture. As much as I would have liked to work with more photos, I certainly think there is something to gain from diving into a single image.
